-Hammar Australia Exhibits Lowest Tare Sideloader with updated lifting capacity, 36 tonnes SWL is as of now standard for the HAMMAR 160 programme

The Hammar 160 S sideloader can proudly trace its ancestry back to 1974 and the original Hammar SL30. Not a totally new design by any measure but certainly improved and brought into modern context and and increased lifting capacity 36 tonnes SWL.

Described by the manufacturer as “almost indestructible”, the original prototype SL 30S is still in service today in Sweden. “The 160S really is the perfect machine for ground-to-ground handling.

In the market for an additional couple of sideloaders, Scott Wettenhall (Wettenhall Logistics, Dandenong VIC) was only too happy to order two of the 160 S units, ahead of the model’s official launch during the truck show.
According to Wettenhall, a Hammar customer going back to 2004, “we wanted a low tare weight to provide us with the capability to carry more container tonnage, so we went for the HAMMAR 160 S. The low weight made it a winner. The simplicity of the machine’s design and operation, fast cycle time (3.5 minutes) and being based on the proven technology we are familiar with was just icing on the cake.”

In Australia, the company currently accounts for more than 50 percent of the market, and the 160S is set to increase that share further.

The first Electric Sideloader in the world

Since the company was founded by Bengt-Olof Hammar in 1974, Hammar’s manufacturing efforts worldwide have been solely focused on sideloaders. From the start, the units have been powered by a diesel power pack, or the prime mover’s PTO. The engineering team at Hammar Australia looked at the current state of play for powering sideloaders and thought about powering the sideloader some other way. “With so many vehicles moving to electric or hybrid electric systems these days an electric drive unit was an obvious choice for consideration”, notes Peter Levison, the company’s Managing Director. The concept really caught the imagination of the team for the efficiency that this could offer and its environmental friendliness. “Thus we set about to develop an electric system to drive the sideloader. After all, the functional (operational) cycle time for a sideloader is only about one hour per day.

That allows for up to say 16 movements. Think about it, at three to four minutes each time that only comes to 60 minutes” explains Levison. Unlike engine-driven sideloaders, when the electric sideloader is not cycling, the motor shuts down. This saves energy, prolongs hydraulic component life and creats a silent environment. Even during the crane cycle, with an electric driven sideloader, the user gets very low noise levels. With increased urban density, noise pollution can be a problem. This is no longer a consideration with an electric sideloader. And, we note that the user gets a lighter unit. This means greater payload capacity and savings in fuel usage. Not only that, as there is less fuel used, there is also less pollution. So, one gets a greener alternative. Additionally, the user gets lower cost through the life of a sideloader.

Admittedly, there is a slight premium to purchasing the new electric alternative. But, with lower operational cost, greater payload and lower fuel costs, the small premium is paid for in only a few years. Mind you as more electric units come on-stream, Hammar Australia expect the premium (approximately 10%) will drop in the coming years. Levison also notes that in line with company’s policy of supplying solutions to individual requirements, the user will have the choice of mains-charging batteries, primemover charging or even generator charging. Introduced at the 2013 Brisbane Truck show this year, the first electric sideloader was delivered to MT Movers in June. According to MT Movers’ Alan Erlandsen, “we are very happy with the sideloader, which is brilliant for use in inner-Brisbane, where noise is a consideration. With trickle charging from the truck during the day we’re finding typically that we are pretty well covered for around 15 movements each day and that the batteries only need a full mains charge on the weekends, so we really couldn’t be happier with the unit.”

Hammar expands and buys unique TRT Sideloader business

Hammar New Zealand Limited has purchased the 3-crane Sideloader business of Hamilton-based Tidd Ross Todd (TRT) Ltd to broaden its range in the New Zealand market.....and the model may also be sold in other countries, creating more jobs through expanded local production.

GUINNESS WORLD RECORD BY HAMMAR

On 27 June we successfully lifted a container weighing 60 tonnes using a standard model HAMMAR 157 H. Present at the event was the press, a TV team and the whole Hammar staff. We have now been officially awarded the certificate by Guinness World Records and an entry in the Guinness World Records book, as the world record holder.

THE WORLDS LOWEST SIDELOADER?

Hammar has, in cooperation with Trailerpartner A/S delivered what we believe to be the lowest built Sideloader in the world to the Faroe Islands. The ground clearance of this 160 S chassis is minimal. The reason for this drastic design is that the fish industry is situated on one side of a 1.5 km long road tunnel, only allowing a max vehicle height of 3.5 meter, and the port in Tvøroyri is situated on the other side. When the food regulation prescribes that the fish products must be frozen and packed in reefer containers at the production site, there is no other alternative.

HAMMAR MEGA TRANSFER STABILIZER

Hammar introduces the new MEGA stabilizer leg for the 150 Series cranes. Designed for easy and safe transfer of containers to and from companion chassis and rail wagons, even under the most difficult situations.

The patented stabilizer is extended onto the other side of the companion vehicle, alternatively supports across both chassis rails and a flat bed trailer. The new MEGA stabilizer is very safe and flexible. It is adjustable to lower height companion trailers and it is guaranteed for 36 tonnes safe workload (SWL), although it is 260 Kg lighter in weight (more payload!) than the standard stabilizer.

HAMMAR 151 Rig Lifter

Hammar has developed a 42 Tonne Rig Lifter specifically designed to lift and handle equipment for land based oil and gas drilling rigs, from 1’ to 60’ long and up to 16’ wide. It can lift masts and other parts that are longer than 60’ and transfer them to other trailers.

This unique HAMMAR removes the need for mobile cranes and rig trucks and can be legally towed on the road while carrying a load itself. The HAMMAR 151HC Rig Lifter is a safe and very cost effective solution, with a capacity equivalent to a 150 Tonne meter crane.

The 600th HAMMAR sold in Australia

The 600th HAMMAR to roll on Australian roads is sold! The deal was closed in May with Judith and Stephen Wemyss of Wemyss Transport in Lytton, Queensland.

Stephen Wemyss was in fact using one of the very first HAMMAR Sideloaders sold in Australia in 1992, when he was with another transport company. And now he has bought the 13th HAMMAR for himself, which also is the 600th in the country. Judith and Stephen have been invited to visit Sweden as guests of Hammar and will make the long trip in 2011.

Hammar Australia celebrates its 15th Anniversary

Hammar Australia is now celebrating its 15th Anniversary. It was incorporated in May 1995 as the first subsidiary of the mother company, Hammar Maskin AB in Sweden. Hammar had a strong desire to offer some real competition, in a market that at that time had the potential of becoming the largest Sideloader market in the world. And all of that came true! Australia is today the largest Sideloader market in the world and Hammar Australia is the largest subsidiary in the Hammar Group. Plus the fact, that it accounts for over 50% of all Sideloader sales in Australia.

HAMMAR Antarctica

Hammar Lift in USA has recently delivered a HAMMAR 195 HB for attachment onto a 20’ sledge for transport and handling of 20’ ISO containers in the Antarctic. The sledge is pulled by a snow cat and two containers can be transported at the same time. One on the HAMMAR and one on an accompanying (B-double) sledge. This is an unusual unit, but a perfect way to handle containers in one of the most remote areas on our planet.

The support legs are painted white, to avoid the sun heating them up. This prevents the snow and ice on the ground to melt from heat, avoiding supports from sinking into the ground.

Hammar wins patent infringement case against Steelbro

New Zealand’s Court of Appeal in Christchurch has judged Steelbro guilty of infringement on HAMMAR’s patent on a new sideloader stabiliser leg design.

“The unanimous decision of the court upholds the patent, that Mr Hammar took out on his development of the new stabiliser legs introduced on our HAMMAR™ 195 sideloader in 1998,” says Fred Sandberg, Managing Director of HAMMAR New Zealand.

The key to the success of the HAMMAR™ 195 sideloader is, that the stabiliser leg is folded in a negative inclination beyond the horizontal position, which saves space. In 2004 Steelbro introduced its SB361 and 401 sidelifters, using the same design as Hammar’s patent. HAMMAR took Steelbro to the High Court in 2008 claiming, among other things, patent infringement. That verdict was appealed. The Appeal Court judges also unanimously dismissed a cross-appeal by Stealbro.

Robot welding speeds up production

Like many others, Hammar was also hit by the economic recession in 2008/2009. Now, when the wind has turned, we are determined to be ready for the increased production without letting our customers suffer from long delivery times.

Hammar has invested in a Euro 500,000 robot welding system from Motoman of Japan, which has just now been started up in production after the initial test/programming runs. The robot is a Motoman EA 1900N, with two cells with individual manipulators dimensioned for a 1000 Kg load and able to rotate our crane arms during welding. The two cells allow maximum usage of the robot as one cell can be set up by the operator, while the robot is welding in the other. The robot is transporting itself on a 13 meter long rail between work stations.

The Motoman EA 1900N system will deliver a more controlled welding process and a more even welding result, compared to even the best license welders.

Hammar is working hard to bring down the lead times in production in order to always deliver on time to customers and this robot system is a part of that strive.

HAMMAR A-Double allows user to legally lift and carry 33 tonne containers *

With road regulations, productivity and cost pressures playing more prominent roles in today’s market, haulage and trucking companies are on a constant search for improvements in container transport.

Introduced at the Brisbane Truck Show early 2009, the HAMMAR A-Double Sideloader has proven itself as a great way to improve productivity in container handling.

The HAMMAR A-Double allows the user to legally lift and carry up to 33 tonne containers, with mass management and on approved B-Double routes, or approximately 29 tonnes, without mass management. The unit allows the user to carry one heavy container, without the need for a companion vehicle, normally a skel and prime mover combination. The A-Double saves time and labour by allowing the heavy container to be loaded on the B trailer. To provide sufficient traction on the drive axles, the sidelifter cranes are moved forward on the A-trailer.

According to Beven Dionysius of Dionysius Transport Service, “we see at least a 50% improvement in efficiency than a normal sideloader combination.” In his inimitable style, Dionysius described the HAMMAR unit as “better than fish and chips”.

Already proven in Europe for some five years now, the HAMMAR A-Double allows the user to carry up to three 20’ containers, or one 20’ and one 40’ container. With mass management this means that up to 43 tonnes, on about a 20 and 23 tonne split, can be carried, using approved B-Double routes.

According to Peter Kelland of Parkwood Transport, this sidelifter allows a driver to enter a yard with this B-Double combination and come out with two heavy containers loaded in just 20 minutes. In fact, their operation relies purely on sideloaders, without any reliance on forklifts. Parkwood Transport has one of these units in their fleet of 12 sideloaders.

The A-Double sideloader acts like a normal 20’-40’ unit, with the added feature of another turntable as an A trailer, in a B-Double combination. The turntable is supplied as part of the package.

Automatic laser cutter increases quality

Our new top of the line automatic laser cutter system has just come on stream. It is a 4 kW Mazak Space Gear 510 Mk II, connected to a steel sheet tower magazine and a loader, allowing the laser cutter to operate un-manned during night time. In fact, even the secluded production hall for it, is new.

With the possibility to tilt the laser head in a 53° angle, we now don’t have to post chamfer weld surfaces in a second work stage, which saves us a lot of precious production time.

This 1 million Euro investment is now being used for cutting all steel plates and profiles for our Sideloaders. The laser beam is cutting with an extremely high precision, which increases the quality and conformity of both cranes and chassis.

Hammar Malaysia delivers the 250th HAMMAR

In July 2008 Hammar Malaysia marked another milestone in Hammar’s world wide sales, as they delivered the 250th HAMMAR in Malaysia to customer Dayang Mewah in Port Klang. The unit was one of five in total delivered at a delivery ceremony to mark the occasion. Hammar Maskin (M) Sdn Bhd, another subsidiary fully owned by Hammar Sweden, was incorporated in 2003 and is headed by Chris Joon since the very start. Hammar Malaysia is by far the leading supplier of sideloaders in Malaysia and is running a state-of-the art service programme, which has won tremendous popularity among local container haulers.

Hammar Australia delivers the 500th HAMMAR

In April 2008 Hammar Australia delivered its 500th HAMMAR to roll on Australian roads. To the customer, Rocke Brothers Pty Ltd in Melbourne, this was their eighth Sideloader. Rocke Brothers move about 1 500 TEU each week and see their HAMMAR Side lifters as absolutely necessary to cope with their some 250 freight movements every day. “The HAMMARs are wonderful machines that are becoming more and more important for companies like ours to deliver seamless, competitive service.” says Paul Rocke.

Hammar Australia Expands

The increased demand for HAMMAR Equipment around Australia has given Hammar the incentive to invest in a new Service Centre in Brisbane, as a first step in a large investment plan.

“We will now be able to give our customers faster and more professional service where being close and always available to the customer is our focus” says Peter Levison, Managing Director for Hammar Australia.

Malcom Thompson will be responsible for the new Service Centre in Brisbane. Malcom has been in charge of the Hammar service from other rented premises since a few years already.

“With new facilities, right location and with more tradesmen skills we will make it as easy as possible for our customers. Probably it will not be just HAMMAR owners to take care of” says Malcom with a smile.

Bengt-Olof Hammar, founder and owner of the Hammar Group, was also present at the official construction start in August 2006.

New production building in Sydney

Hammar's new production building in Sydney, Australia was only recently finished and the assembly phase of the Sideloader production could move into the new and modern facility, that also includes new offices.

The old production space is still being used, but now only for producing the chassis. - “There was simply not enough space and we had to extend to cope with the increasing production volumes of new HAMMARs. To separate the heavy production from the assembly was a natural solution” says Peter Levison, Managing Director for Hammar Australia.

Together with Megan, Jim and a few others of Hammar's employees in Sydney, Peter could proudly show the result to Bengt-Olof Hammar, founder and owner of the Hammar Group, at one of his regular visits in Australia.
